Open abaya vs closed abaya

Short answer: buy a closed abaya if you want one garment you can throw on and leave the house in. Buy an open abaya if you want to layer it over an outfit, or want something that reads more like occasion wear.

Closed abaya

A closed abaya is stitched shut down the front and goes on over the head, like a very long dress. Because there is no front opening, the silhouette is uninterrupted, which is why most everyday and prayer abayas are closed.

Open abaya

An open abaya runs open all the way down the front, worn over an inner slip or dress. It is usually belted or tied, and often comes as a set with a matching inner and scarf.

• More versatile — layer it over jeans, a dress or an inner
• Reads dressier, so better for Eid, nikahs, walimahs and guest outfits
• Easier to get on and off without disturbing your hijab
• Fabrics: satin, chiffon, embellished nida, embroidered crepe

Sizing either style

Both are sized by length: 52 (5ft–5ft2), 54 (5ft3–5ft5), 56 (5ft6–5ft8), 58 (5ft9+). Open abayas are more forgiving on width because they are not fastened all the way down, so if you are between sizes on an open style, go by height alone. More detail in the abaya FAQs.
