How to wash and care for an abaya
An abaya that is washed properly keeps its drape for years. One hot machine wash can ruin an embellished one permanently. Here is the rule of thumb from AMIRIS.

Ironing
Iron on low heat, on the reverse side, while the fabric is very slightly damp. Never run an iron directly over crystal, stone work, sequins or lace — put a cotton cloth between the iron and the embellishment, or steam the garment on a hanger instead. Steaming is safer than ironing for satin and chiffon.
Storage
Hang abayas on wide or padded hangers so the shoulders do not crease or stretch. Heavily beaded occasion abayas are better folded with tissue paper between the layers, because the weight of the beading pulls the shoulders out of shape over time. Keep satin out of direct sunlight — it fades.
Common problems
- Deodorant marks — dab with cold water and a little white vinegar before washing; do not rub.
- Loose crystals — secure with a tiny dot of clear fabric glue rather than sewing, which can pull the weave.
- Static on jersey and nida — a light mist of water or an anti-static spray on the inner, not the abaya.
- Creasing in linen — hang it in the bathroom during a hot shower; most of it drops out.
How often to wash
Everyday jersey and nida abayas: every 2–3 wears. Occasion and embellished abayas: only when actually needed — air them out after wearing and spot-clean instead. Over-washing is what ages an abaya, not wearing it.
